World Wide Sires Ltd, the leading cattle genetics marketing organisation representing the two of the largest US Artificial Insemination Cooperatives (AIC), is eyeing Punjab market.
According to WWS CEO John Schouten, the Cooperative Milk Societies and government organisations have started working with the dairy farmers in Punjab and are establishing a well knit network to provide best quality semen and services.
Earlier WWS has worked with Animal Husbandry Department, Punjab Dairy Development Board (PDDB) and Ludhiana-based Progressive Dairy Farmers Association (PDFA). It has already supplied 88,000 doses of semen through this network.
“Buoyant over the results of past one year, WWS decided to get directly in touch with the dairy farmers. Under this programme 800 youth, trained by the animal husbandry department of Punjab for dairy farming, would be taken,” said John.
Dwelling further on the benefits of improved varieties of cow obtained through superior quality semen, John said that AIC has more than 2,400 bulls with best quality of semen, coming online of which more than 350 are in active production at the two cooperatives. The daughters of these bulls yield more than 11,000 litres per lactation. “When insemination would be done in Indian bred cows, it would produce progeny that would yield a significantly higher milk production,” he said.
He added that with increase in milk yield, the illegal activities of synthetic milk manufacturers will also be capped. “Unless and until, the demand and supply of milk is not brought at par, synthetic milk manufacturing mafia can’t be controlled,” he added.
“WWS will also impart consultancy and veterinary opinion in rearing the improved progeny. As per the results, an improved variety gives three times more milk than usual cow, but does not consume thrice the amount of food. This also results in lesser input and greater output,” he added.
