Phone-hacking: More settle claims with Murdoch
Press Trust of India / London Feb 08, 2012, 19:32 IST

More individuals reached out-of-court settlements with Rupert Murdoch's News International today in the phone-hacking case, as inquiries continue at various levels into unethical news-gathering practices at the media baron's UK titles.

Alistair Campbell, spokesman for former prime minister Tony Blair, is among nine people whose cases were settled today.

The others include Liberal democrats MP Simon Hughes and Sally King, a friend of former Home Secretary David Blunkett.

Comedian Steve Coogan received 40,000 pounds while ex-footballer Paul Gascoigne settled for 68,000 pounds.

Hughes received 45,000 pounds.

The latest settlements mean that 15 more phone hacking cases have now been settled, including nine of the 10 which were due to go to civil trial on Monday.

There were 37 other claims settled last month.

Campbell said he would be using the settlement money to make donations to several organisations, including the Labour Party, "so that at least some small good for the causes I believe in can come out of the criminality and cultural depravity of others".

He said in a statement: "For me, this has been about people with a voice and a platform using them to change the media culture which, as I argued at the Leveson Inquiry, has become putrid in parts."

Hughes said he had settled "because I am completely satisfied that the evidence which currently exists in relation to my case has been disclosed to or is being made available to my lawyers".

But Hugh Tomlinson, who represents some of the 10 claimants whose case was due to go to trial next week, said a claim by singer Charlotte Church and her parents had not been resolved.

The announcement, at a hearing here before Justice Vos, came during the latest in a number of pre-trial reviews in preparation for the long-awaited trial.

These 10 claimants were thought to include Miss Church and her parents, Coogan, Andrew, singer Pete Doherty, MP Hughes, Tracey Temple, who had a relationship with Lord Prescott, jockey Kieren Fallon and racing trainer Samantha Wallin and the King family.
