PDP leaders block highway in Jammu
Press Trust of India / Jammu Apr 25, 2009, 16:40 IST

About 40 PDP leaders and workers today blocked highway here and staged a demonstration in protest against the cancellation of notification by Election Commission for holding bye-polls in Hazratbal assembly constituency in Srinagar district.

Carrying banners, the PDP activists, led by some party leaders, blocked the vehicular traffic on highway near Gandhi Nagar for half an hour from 1030 hours, official sources said here.

However, police forcibly evicted them from the highway to enable smooth movement of traffic, they said, adding the PDP activists then marched up to the office of Chief Electoral Officer, J and K, and held demonstration there.

They were protesting against the cancellation of the notification by EC for holding bye-elections for the Hazratbal assembly constituency, which was scheduled to go to the polls on May 7 along with Sonawar assembly constituency and Srinagar-Budgam Lok Sabha seat.

The EC had cancelled the notification for this assembly constituency on April 23, after finding that returning officer had wrongly accepted the nomination papers of National Conference (NC) candidate Sheikh Mustafa Kamal, who is also brother of the former chief minister and NC president Farooq Abdullah.
