The Oxford University Press (OUP) sees Bangalore to be a growing, big market for its books. To gain from this growth, it has opened a new office in Bangalore to house its ever-expanding team. In Bangalore, OUP has 20-25 authors writing on various subjects. It has a staff of 475 in all in the city
OUP meets the major needs of the IT professional in the city today and the firm has a major chunk of its customers coming from this group. OUP sees this group as a captive market for its titles.
In addition to this, Bangalore’s numerous institutions like IISc, National Law School, Indian Social Institute and the numerous engineering colleges and medical colleges has given a fillip to OUP’s business in this part of the country. The OUP counts the students and research scholars among their main clientele.
Today, it is the emerging markets that are growing and India is the fastest of these. For OUP, India is its fastest growing market and the biggest market excluding the US and UK. According to Manzar Khan, managing director, OUP India, “India has been seeing a high growth for the last 4-5 years.” People now want better quality books and this has meant that while the number of books being sold are on the rise, it has translated into a quantum growth in the total business for the company.
“India is growing larger in value and size as a market for OUP. It is hence a major focus for us,” said Neil Tomkins, MD, OUP.
