Orissa poised to emerge as a major IT hub: Naveen
BS Reporter / Kolkata/ Berhampur Aug 21, 2010, 00:02 IST

With several leading IT companies evincing interest to set up their centres in the state, Orissa is poised to emerge as one of the major investment destinations in the IT sector.

This was stated here by state Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.

There has been a significant growth in the IT sector in the state in the last five years and in the next three to four years the growth is expected to increase manifold as several BPOs, IT and financial services had evinced interest to establish their units in the state, he said.

Patnaik was here to inaugurate the third centre of Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) at Ambapua on the outskirts of Berhampur. Union minister of state for communication and information technology Sachin Pilot was also present on the occasion.

Speaking on the occasion, Pilot said, “The Centre has prepared a roadmap to make every youth in the rural areas computer literate. The time is not far when everybody would have access to information at the click of the button.”

The new STPI at Berhampur is the third STPI in the state after Bhubaneswar and Rourkela and the 52nd in the country.

There are 44 out of 52 STPIs in the country located in the small towns like Berhampur and the objective is to give all facilities to the rural youths that are available in other metros and IT cities like Bangalore, Pilot said.

Ramesh Majhi, the state IT minister said, in order to make the rural people computer savvy, the state government has been established around 4000 Common Service Centres (CSCs) across the state.

Director General of STPI Omkar Rai said “The main objective of the STPI is to make the region one of the preferred IT destinations and attract IT companies to the state. This will help to create indirect employment opportunities for the technical educated mass in the state”.
