Bringing about a casteless society is one of the directive principles of the Constitution. Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar has declared that enumeration of caste in the forthcoming census will be a regressive step. If you leave out the political system, caste has disappeared in most sectors. While caste is no longer a defining factor, except for reservation, in the corporate sector, the vast small-scale sector, the education system, the media, etc., it has become a tool in the hands of the political parties for garnering votes and selecting candidates.
This is against the spirit of democracy and secularism.
Our political system is dividing the country, destabilising the political set-up, eroding our unity and criminalising and corrupting institutions. In the elections at various levels — national, state and panchayat — caste is considered an important factor.
