Hyundai to increase overseas presence
Press Trust of India / Chennai Feb 22, 2010, 21:02 IST

South Korean car maker's subsidiary Hyundai Motor India (HMIL) today said it would increase its overseas presence this year by adding 10 new markets.

"We started our exports with 20 Santro cars to Nepal in 1999. We have been exporting Santro, i10, i20 and Accent to 110 countries. Now, we have planned to add 10 new markets, starting with Australia" HMIL Managing Director H W Park told reporters here.

The company today shipped around 500 units of i20 range of models to Australia, he said.

According to company executives, the company has been exporting 'Getz' from Hyundai Motor Corporation, Korea to Australia. However, this is the first time that they are exporting i20 range of models from India and planned to export 10,000-15,000 units by year-end, sources said.

HMIL VP Arvind Saxena said: "Last year we exported 2.48 lakh units, this year we are planning to take it up to 2.60 lakh units."

On projected exports, he said 50 per cent would constitute i10 range of cars while the remaining would be a mix up of other models.

The company aims to grab a market share of 20.6 per cent to 21 per cent. The company had sold 3.20 lakh units last year.

On shifting the production base of i20 from India to Europe plant he said, "Some production (of i20s) would be shifted to Turkey plant as planned."
