Hyundai regains second spot from Tata Motors in July
Press Trust of India / New Delhi Aug 02, 2010, 17:10 IST

Hyundai Motor India wrested the position of India's second biggest carmaker from Tata Motors in July by selling 28,811 units, a month after losing the spot to the rival, even as the battle continued.

Despite the increased sales of Nano after its Sanand facility in Gujarat started production, Tata Motors' domestic sales in July stood at 27,864 units last month.

Tata Motors had sold 9,000 units of the Rs 1-lakh car in July, while the figure had touched 7,704 units in June.

In June, Tata Motors claimed the second spot by selling 27,811 units, compared to Hyundai Motor's 27,366.

As per figures released by the two companies, while Hyundai Motor's domestic sales increased by only 24.22 per cent in July, that of Tata Motors' rose by 62.08 per cent -- boosted by good Nano sales.

After the Nano's mother plant at Sanand in Gujarat was inaugurated on June 2, Tata Motors surprised the domestic auto industry by beating Hyundai Motor's years-long stranglehold.

Maruti Suzuki continues to be the undisputed market leader, notching up its best-ever monthly sales in July at 90,114 units, a 33.45 per cent increase from 67,528 units in July 2009.
