How to jazz up your guitar
IN STORE
Aabhas Sharma / New Delhi Jan 23, 2010, 00:13 IST

For most guitar enthusiasts — budding or professional — their instrument is much more than, well, just an instrument — it’s a friend, a companion, or a piece of art that needs care and attention. With the penchant for jazzing up guitars growing among aficionados, the market for guitar accessories is growing too.

A worthy case

You could judge a guitar by its cover. The old-fashioned guitar case has given way to newer and sleeker options. Gator, for instance, is a brand which has cases in all shapes and sizes suitable both for electric as well as acoustic guitars, in aluminium, wood and plastic.
Price: Starts at Rs 1,000; the wooden and aluminium cases cost between Rs 5,000 and Rs 7,000.

Strap it up

Though some musicians don’t like the idea of having a strap for the guitar, most guitarists use them for a “rock star” look and feel. Straps are particularly handy when you’re performing live. Not surprisingly, the music mart offers a wide choice of guitar straps and some are also designed after popular bands. They are made of either leather or suede. The Joe Satriani Signature series, for instance, have been gaining popularity since the straps have been designed by the legendary guitarist himself. Inspired by some of his chartbusters like “Up in Flames”, each strap has a unique design.
Price: Starts from as little as Rs 150 and can go up to Rs 1,500.

Take your pick

When it comes to plectrums, or picks, as they’re called, it’s more about comfort than anything else. But then again, who says comfort can’t be stylish? You could get a set of six picks in different shapes, colours and sizes instead of just one or two. The Jim Dunlop pick holder, for example, is the ideal accessory for picks. You can stick the holder on your guitar, so that you will always have an array of picks at your disposal both while practising and on stage. Even better: it also prevents your picks from getting misplaced.
Prices: A range, from Rs 200 to Rs 1,200.

All accessories can be bought at music stores such as Furtados in Delhi (011-46105145), Bangalore and Mumbai (022-66225454), On Stage in Delhi (011-29810536), Noida and Mumbai
