Press Trust of India / New Delhi Dec 21, 2009, 20:53 IST

Director of IIM Shillong Prof Ashok Dutta has landed in a controversy after a few faculty members quit and complained that he was functioning in an "autocratic" manner, an allegation denied by the institute.

The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) has a sought a report from the HRD Ministry on the issue.

As per the complaints, Dutta appointed a few "unimpressive" persons as faculty and "misbehaved" with some staff, HRD Ministry sources said.

The PMO sough a report taking cognisance of media reports on the matter. The HRD Ministry has sough a report from the IIM, the sources said.

Dutta was not available for comment on the complaints.

IIM Shillong Chairman Prof Ratin Dutta, however, said that the existing faculty and students are happy with the Director.

"I spoke to the faculty and found that they are happy with the Director. There were certain allegations against the Director by three-four faculty members who made these complaints after quitting the institute," he said adding that he has sent his report to the HRD Ministry.

There are 13 faculty members in the institute now. IIM Shillong is the youngest of all IIMs and started functioning in 2008.
