CERC allows grid connectivity for 50-Mw hydro projects

To boost power generation from renewable sources, Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC) today allowed grid connectivity for hydro power projects of 50-Mw capacity, lowering the earlier limit of 250 Mw.
The threshold has been reduced to 50 Mw for hydro electric generating stations and other generating stations using renewable sources of energy, the power sector regulator said in a statement today.
Earlier, hydro power projects of 250 Mw and above were connected to the National Grid.
CERC also permitted grid connectivity to those hydro power projects, which can collectively generate 50 Mw of power.
For example, two hydro generating stations having a capacity of 30 Mw and 20 Mw can collectively seek connectivity with the inter-state grid at a single connection point if they mutually agree to assume operational and commercial responsibilities, the statement said.
These changes have been made by CERC in view of the feedback received that state transmission utilities in many stations are not in a position to extend connectivity to their systems and this difficulty was hindering the development of hydro electric stations and renewable source-based stations.
