A tribute to the dead

Amar Singh is pouring bitter vitriol on his detractors after Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Mulayam Singh Yadav accepted his resignation from the party. His tribute to Janeshwar Mishra, one of his bitterest critics in SP, is an example of how to write a respectfully disrespectful obituary. Singh recalls the contradictions in Mishra’s politics and the positions he took and their last meeting — where the two clashed on “computer aur angrezi” (computers and English).

Mishra’s advice to Singh was: “Become a socialist; identify with the deprived; take care of your health.” Singh says he now realises how correct the advice was: So he’s going to call on George Fernandes and Rabi Ray; and take care of his health. There’s a political path there somewhere...
